SPRING NEWSLETTER

Weed-Free Lawns are a matter of maintenance

The growth of broadleaf weeds in your lawn will be encouraged if your turf is neglected. Dandelions, clover, plantain and spurge are all common types of broadleaf weeds that will grow relentlessly in your lawn unless we do something to stop them.

Broadleaf weeds are prolific seed producers. One plant alone can produce thousands of seeds, which are naturally present in all soils. Once the seeds germinate, broadleaf weeds grow and spread more quickly than your grass plants. Mature broadleaf weeds will compete with your turf for sun, water, and nutrients, seriously compromising the heath and beauty of your lawn.

Our lawn care program will handle most broadleaf weed problems, but we’ll need your help for the most effective control. Keeping your lawn thick, green and growing will reduce infestation considerably. Here are a few ways to do that:

Mow higher
By mowing at a height of 3” to 3 ½”, you’ll keep your soil shaded. This will prevent the sunlight necessary for germination from reaching the weed seeds in your soil. Longer grass blades will also contain more of the green, food-producing cells needed for healthy growth.
Water sufficiently
Your lawn needs from 1” to 11/2” of water per week, and you should water to a depth of 6”. You can use a rain gauge to determine how much water will be necessary to supplement rainfall.
Fertilize regularly
By sticking to our regular program of fertilization, your lawn will receive the nutrients it requires for lush growth and long-lasting vitality.
If broadleaf weeds do appear in your lawn, we will treat them with post-emergent controls. After the application, you’ll need to be patient, because it can take up to three weeks for the weeds to completely disappear.

With a little teamwork, we can control one of your lawn’s biggest competitors. For more information about broadleaf weed control, give us a call today.

SPRING INTO ACTION

Things to do before things heat up

If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to plan your landscape’s color display and order annuals you’ll need. There are many great annuals to choose from for beautiful color all season long.
Consider adding a blended topsoil mix to your planting beds. A combination of topsoil, sand and compost will promote healthier growth.
Will you be entertaining outdoors this spring? If so, use a pressure washer for quick, easy cleaning of your deck or patio. Pressure washers will peel away mildew, leaf stains and grime, and should be available for sale or rent at your local home goods store.

Take some time to sharpen your mower blades. Dull mower blades will shred the tips of your grass blades and leave your lawn looking tan rather than green. Shredded grass blades will also make it easier for diseases to infect your lawn.

HARD AT WORK

In order to make just one tablespoon of honey, bees have to collect nectar from 2,000 flowers. And to make a one-pound honey comb, bees must collect nectar from 2,000,000 flowers. No wonder they’re so busy!

Combining form and function with Natural Screens

Are you interested in creating a private outdoor space where you can relax without any distractions? Would you like to hide certain outdoor elements from view? If so, you may want to incorporate natural screening into your landscape. Natural screens serve the dual purpose of enhancing your landscape’s looks while providing privacy or concealment. Here are just a few options to consider:

A solid hedge of trees or shrubs
Quick-growing vines on trellises

Tall flowers, raised planting beds or tall ornamental grasses
For more ideas, we suggest taking a trip to your local nursery. We’re sure you’ll find a wide variety of screening materials to choose from

GYPSY MOTHS: destroy millions of trees each year

Gypsy moths are highly destructive pests, and are spreading across the United States at an alarming rate. Adult moths deposit their egg masses on tree trunks, walls, and even underneath vehicles (which helps them spread from state to state).

The hungry caterpillars that hatch from gypsy moth eggs can easily defoliate even the largest of trees. In fact, most caterpillars can consume over 10 square feet of foliage during their development.
Branch dieback and decline are often the results as weakened trees become more susceptible to damage from disease and other insects.
While oak trees are the preferred food source for gypsy moth caterpillars, they’ve been known to feed on other species as well. If you think your trees may be suffering from a gypsy moth infestation, be sure to arrange for a tree inspection as soon as possible.

This year, make your lawn and landscape the best it can be.
