Quenching your lawn’s thirst

Proper watering is crucial for a healthy lawn during the summer months

In order to keep your lawn thick, green and healthy during the warmer summer months, you need to keep it actively growing. To ensure active growth, one thing is essential: water.

Without the proper amount of water, lawns are more likely to fall victim to stress. In addition, water-deprived lawns have more trouble fighting off weeds than lawns that are well-watered.

Remember, however, that it is possible for your lawn to get too much of a good thing. Over watered lawns may look green and healthy, but they often suffer from shallow root systems which may inhibit future growth.

How much is enough?

Most lawns require from 1 to 1 ½” of water per week to stay healthy. By using a rain gauge, available at most gardening stores, you can measure the amount of rainwater your lawn is getting per week. If rainfall isn’t providing your lawn with the required 1 to 1 ½”, you’ll need to step in with some supplemental watering.

Are there any visual cues?

Under most circumstances, your lawn’s appearance will also dictate when to water. You should water within one day if you notice any of the following:

Grass is turning purple-blue and wilting
Footprints remain on the lawn
Grass blades are folded or rolled
What about an automatic system?

With an automatic system, you’ll never forget to water. In addition, in-ground systems enable you to take advantage of those times of day when the water pressure is highest. Remember that providing your lawn with enough water is a top priority during hot and dry periods, whether you have an automatic or a manual system.

Tips to keep your landscape healthy

Summer is here at last! In between barbecues, pool parties and camping trips, here are a few things you can do to keep your landscape, and family, healthy and happy all summer long.

Be weed wary. Watch for weeds, especially along sidewalks, curbs and driveways. Warmer soil in these areas tends to encourage weed growth.

Be safe. Keep any fertilizers or chemicals locked up and out of the reach of children.

Water trees and shrubs. During the warmer summer months, your trees and shrubs will benefit from a long, slow watering once a week.

Mow regularly. Mow whenever your lawn needs it. Vary the direction in which you mow to improve your turf’s grain, and leave your grass blades longer in hotter weather.

This year, make your lawn and landscape the best it can be.
